Onstage at Theatre Three: Talley’s Folly
Theatre Three’s 2009-2010 “Pursuit of Happiness” Season continues with the Pulitzer Prize-winning romantic comedy, Talley’s Folly by Lanford Wilson. Everyone has a different idea of happiness and how to get it: living a full life onstage, winning a spelling bee, merging two very different lives for romantic success, surviving all of life’s changes with grace, creating something entertaining at the very last minute, treasuring America’s musical heritage, learning how to dance again, celebrating the holidays with wild abandon, paying tribute to a legendary talent, finding that one true love, and conquering personal demons. Talley’s Folly begins previews on Thursday, November 19, 2009 and will close on Sunday, December 20, 2009.

Sally Talley and Matt Friedman have almost nothing in common: they have different religious backgrounds, he is more than a decade older than she, her family does not approve of him, and their life experiences seem to pull them apart even more. But in a dilapidated boathouse on July 4, 1944, aided only by moonlight and chirping crickets on a clear Missouri night, Matt is determined to convince Sally that they may actually be the perfect couple.

Talley’s Folly received its premiere at Circle Repertory Company in New York City on May 3, 1979. Directed by Marshall W. Mason, the cast included Judd Hirsch (Matt Friedman) and Trish Hawkins (Sally Talley). Talley’s Folly was honored with a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1980.
