| (Dallas, Texas) Theatre Three’s intimate downstairs play space, Theatre Too!, kicks-off its 2006-2007 seven show series with a fabulous one-woman show, All About Bette: An Evening with Bette Davis. Theatre Two housed the popular and critically acclaimed Spotlight Series and Appetizer Attraction series and is starting its first-ever full-length play series. All performances take place in Theatre Too!, the intimate 90-seat venue just below Theatre Three. All About Bette: An Evening with Bette Davis begins on Friday, June 30, 2006 and will close on Sunday, July 16, 2006.
Bette Davis has rightfully earned a few nicknames over the years, including "Queen of Hollywood", the "First Lady of the American Screen", and "the Fifth Warner Brother". Starting out at Warner Brothers in 1931, she landed her first starring role in The Man Who Played God. Davis went on to earn ten Academy Awards nominations, a record later broken by Katharine Hepburn’s twelve nominations, and won two Academy Awards for Dangerous (1936) and Jezebel (1939). Proclaimed by many as the greatest screen actress of all time, Davis captured the hearts of thousands with her captivating screen presence, her phenomenal portrayal of strong women, and with her trademark seductive gaze, for which songwriter Kim Carnes named her song, “Bette Davis Eyes.” As a leading diva in the hey-day of Hollywood starlets, Bette Davis’s life off-screen was just as—if not more—intriguing than her on-screen career. Davis married four times and had countless affairs, including one with millionaire director Howard Hughes. All About Bette is a not-to-be-missed show for two wonderful reasons. For one, the playwright is our very own former Theatre Three actress, Camilla Carr. Carr has done an impeccable job chronicling Davis’s gripping life story into a smooth one-woman show with a surprise-twist ending. Secondly, the theatre’s old gang is back together again, with Executive Producer-Director Jac Alder directing, Ms. Carr working on her script, Theatre Three’s original lighting designer LeRoy Logan assisting the production, and former long-time resident costume designer Patty Greer McGarity creating the perfect look to evoke Bette Davis. This reunion of select Theatre Three veteran artists will surely deliver an outstanding production about a timeless icon. About The Playwright: Camilla Carr Camilla Carr, acclaimed novelist, playwright, short story writer, and screenwriter, is the author of the first show of the Theatre Too 2006-2007 season, All About Bette. Bette is a one-woman play based on the life of Hollywood starlet Bette Davis. Carr started researching Bette Davis’s life after Wicked actress Carole Kane approached Carr, asking if she would write a play for Kane to portray Davis. It took Carr two years of research and four years to write the play. Carr was writing by the age of seven, and had written twenty-two novellas by the time she was fifteen. She began at Theatre Three in 1966 in Stop the World--I Want to Get Off! Her other Theatre Three productions include: The Boyfriend (1968), Company (1973), and Present Laughter (1980). Carr just finished the screenplay for Nobel-prize winner Thomas Mann’s novella, The Black Swan. She claims her favorite work of her own is her critically acclaimed first novel, Topsy Dingo Wild Dog (1989). When asked if she has any advice for aspiring playwrights, Ms. Carr replied, “be as involved as possible, and read as much as you can.” For the past thirty years, Carr has been living and working in Los Angeles.
