Frozen anatomizes the chilling psyche of a child murder and the grief of one of his victims' mothers. It premiered in 1998 at Birmingham Rep in Birmingham, UK. It debuted on Broadway at Circle in the Square Theatre from May 4-August 22, 2004 under the direction of Doug Hughes. The original Broadway cast included Swoosie Kurtz, Brian F. O’Byrne, Laila Robins, and Sam Kitchin. It is making its first appearance on the Dallas theatre scene this season at Theatre Three. Frozen won the 2004 Tony Awards for Best Play and Best Featured Actor in a Play, received two Tony Award nominations in 2004 (best direction and best actress), and was nominated for the 2004 Drama Desk Award Outstanding Actor in a Play. Journalists covering child abductions have brought most of us to feel the ultimate bad news about predators and children. Theatre Three’s production of Frozen is nothing less than an exploration of the nature of evil. However unnerving the facts of such cases are, it is the force that the facts represent which are reckoned with in this 2004 Tony Award-winning drama of incredible moral force. With a couple twists at the end of the play, the audience is astonishingly led from utter darkness to the light. About The Playwright: Bryony Lavery Bryony Lavery, fed up of playing poor parts in plays (such as the left arm of a sofa) decided to write better parts in plays for women and has since written more than 20 plays. Even though her career began I teaching, she started writing plays in her spare time as a student. Lavery has also produced for television and radio and written books, including a biography of Tallulah Bankhead. She has been an Artistic Director of Gay Sweatshop and Female Trouble and a teacher of playwriting at Birmingham University. Her most celebrated work, her 1998 dramatic play Frozen, was the source of controversy in late 2004 when it was alleged that portions of the play were plagiarized from Malcolm Gladwell's 1997 New Yorker profile of psychiatrist Dorothy Lewis. About Theatre Three: Theatre Three was founded in 1961 by Norma Young, Jac Alder, Esther Ragland, and Robert Dracup with a clear mission: To PRODUCE a wide range of literature for the state, ILLUMINATE the ideas and emotions the author intends to express, SUPPORT the preservation and growth of the spoken and written word, CREATE a workplace where area theatre artists can realize their potential, PROMOTE theatre as an experience for all peoples, and SERVE the immediate and larger community with good theatre art.
