Onstage at Theatre Three: Glorious!
(Dallas, Texas) Theatre Three’s Mainstage Season of the 2006 – 2007 season begins with Peter Quilter’s delightful new comedy,Glorious!. Theatre Three’s forty-sixth season features captivating dramas, exciting and innovative musicals, and hilarious comedies that celebrate the underdogs of society who fight back and make audiences stand up and cheer their efforts. Glorious begins previews on Thursday, November 9, 2006 and will close on Saturday, December 10, 2006.

“My audiences are very noisy. At first, I was confused. But then I saw how the people at Mr. Sinatra’s concerts would scream and faint during the high notes. And I have much the same effect on my own audience. So now I take it all in much the same way as he does – as the highest level of approval for a vocal tour de force. I just love that everyone seems to love me.” – Florence Foster Jenkins in Glorious

Florence Foster Jenkins loves to sing, but she cannot carry a tune. However, this minor detail does not stop her from singing in public or from becoming a beloved legendary performer. Based on the true story of the screeching socialite and self-proclaimed soprano, Glorious! captures the endearing qualities of possibly the worst singer ever. Encouraged by her friends, Dorothy and St Clair, and accompanied by her sensitive concert pianist, Cosme McMoon, Florence embarks on an unusual musical career, singing for various society groups dressed in elaborate and spectacularly camp costumes. Despite her obvious lack of talent and the audience’s screams of laughter, Florence delights in her performances, compares herself with some of the greatest singers of her era, and even makes a recording of her favorite songs. At the height of her popularity, Florence faces the greatest challenge and honor of her eccentric career: a sold-out concert at Carnegie Hall.

After premiering at various British regional theatres, Glorious opened at the Duchess Theatre in London on November 1, 2005. Directed by Simon Higlett and produced by Michael Codran and Lee Dean, the show starred Maureen Lipman, Barrie Ingham, William Oxborrow, Lolly Susi, Janie Booth, and Josie Kidd. The show was designed by Alan Strachan.
